Elf-friend (Vinr Älfakyn in the Ancient Language) was an honorary title. It meant that you were a kind and trusted person to the elves. It also meant that you could enter Du Weldenvarden and all of the cities therein without trouble. It was represented by the Yawë symbol. Arya had a Yawë tattooed onto her shoulder, while Brom had the insignia on his ring Aren, which was later in Eragon's possession. When Queen Izlanzadi chastised Oromis for not revealing Eragon's existence to her, Oromis referenced this title, stating that she had forgotten "Brom, Vinr Älfakyn, the last of the Elf Friends."
