Human rights abuses and economic mismanagement leading to hyperinflation and impoverishment increased popular support for newly sworn-in Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai. However, following a deteriorating situation in the country, the Concert of Democracies intervened militarily by invading Zimbabwe in April 2009, which resulted in the Mugabe regime being removed from power. Since then Tsvangirai has been sworn in as the Provisional President of Zimbabwe, with free, democratic elections set for October 2009.
