Rat Ogres were created from a mixture of various parts taken from different species, including the Skaven themselves. The exact creatures used is closely guarded secret of Clan Moulder, who has a monopoly on their production. Skaven packmasters raise them harshly, forcing the creatures to fight and compete for food even from birth (some rat ogres may be born through cross-breeding). This is done to ensure that only the strongest, most violent and most dominant rat ogres survive. The rat ogres which the Skaven field in battle are only taken from the best of a litter, the weak never survive long enough to reach maturity.

The exact creatures used is closely guarded secret of Clan Moulder, who has a monopoly on their production. The rat ogres which the Skaven field in battle are only taken from the best of a litter, the weak never survive long enough to reach maturity. Rat ogres are powerful creatures but stupid ones, they are driven primarily by the instinct to kill and little else. Without the 'guidance' of their packmasters they will just as quickly turn on the Skaven or fight between themselves as they would the enemy. The first Rat Ogre was successfully produced in c.1300. One notable rat ogre is the Beast of Vandheim who terrorised the imperial town of Vandheim in c.1613 IC.
