In matchlocks, the clamp held a slow-burning wick (or slow match) which was pressed into the flash pan. In wheellocks, the clamp held a piece of flint which was struck against the rotating metal wheel. In snaphances and flintlocks, the clamp held a piece of flint which hit the striking surface (frizzens in flintlocks, and steel faces in snaphances).
