Though less prolific than bandmate Andy Partridge, he has written many of the group's most popular songs, including their first three UK hit singles: "Life Begins At The Hop", "Making Plans For Nigel", and "Generals and Majors". "Making Plans For Nigel" was also a Top 20 hit in Canada, and "Generals and Majors" was the band's first U.S. chart entry, peaking at #104 in 1980. Moulding's style of bass playing is characterized by a strong and tasteful melodic sensibility, much in the tradition of such predecessors as James Jamerson, Paul McCartney, and Brian Wilson. Representative track examples of Moulding's playing include "Burning With Optimism's Flames," "Snowman," "Season Cycle" and "Easter Theatre". Moulding contributed five tracks to the album Skylarking and four each to Go 2, Drums and Wires, English Settlement and Nonsuch. XTC's final album, Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2), was issued in 2000. A handful of other new XTC tracks (including Moulding's "Where Did All The Ordinary People Go" and "Say It") appeared on singles and compilation albums up until 2005. After this point, XTC became inactive. In February 2007, Partridge told music website Pitchfork Media that Moulding was "not interested in music anymore, and doesn't want to write." In February 2008, Partridge stated that Moulding has moved and the only method of contact between them is e-mails via their manager, effectively ending potential future collaborations.
