When most websites ask you to verify your email address, they send you an email that contains a link with a unique identifier. Following the link tells the server that you got the email, since otherwise you wouldn't have been able to visit that page. If you did not receive such an email, either your email provider detected it as spam for some reason and put it in your Spam folder, or you entered your email address incorrectly when you signed up.
