He was especially cautious with money at least before he married Marie Antoinette an Austrian princess whose brother Joseph II ruled Austria. She was very well known for her extravagance and she managed to override her husband's cautiousness. In 1775, the colonists of the Thirteen American Colonies (under British rule) revolted. Louis sent the Marquis de Lafayette to help them. In 1783, this war ended and the Americans were independent. However, France was now on the edge of bankruptcy.
