| - The man was actually a bounty hunter. He had a wanted poster with sketches of Nick, LaCroix, and Janette. From this, he had recognized Nick and decided to bring him in for the reward. At the top of the poster is the word "Wanted". Under that, in small letters, it continues, "for murder in Calaferas County". Under that it says, "$1000 Reward". Below that, however, it is only possible to make out "Suspects are—" since the rest of the line is hidden by a fold in the paper.

Underneath each of the three rough sketches a name is printed in small letters. Length and shape indicates that LaCroix was using his own surname, and Nick and Janette their usual personal names. However, LaCroix's personal name and the others' surnames appear to have been aliases; and the letters are too indistinct to make out what they are. Under that is a printed paragaph that is headed, "Will be paid by this Department for his apprehension, in addition to any reward offered by Municipal Authorities for State Conviction." The paragraph itself is written in letters too small to be read. Beneath that, the name "Andrew E. Loew" can be made out; but the printing on the rest of the sheet is too small, and much of it is out of shot.
