- One of the song's interpretations is that the narrator is observing an acquaintance spiral down into depression and gradually worsening. The narrator implies they don't have anything to do with it, but during the last chorus appears to be the reason as to why this person has gotten worse.
- The Today Show began in 1980 hosted by respected journalists Graham Luck and Mary Deane. Origianlly a 2 hour program airing from 7am, it expanded to a 6am start in 1993. - Today, also known as The Today Show, is a daily morning news and talk program on NBC. Debuting in January 1952, it is also the third-longest running American television series. The Muppets were frequent guests on Today in the early 1960s, doing local cut-ins for the show from Washington, D.C. They performed sketches from Sam and Friends; Jim Henson and Jane Nebel were also interviewed occasionally. - "Today" is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins which reflects the mood of lead singer Billy Corgan, who was very depressed when he wrote it. Corgan was in therapy, suffering from writer's block, and struggling with expectations that The Smashing Pumpkins would be the next Nirvana. Corgan: "I was really suicidal. I just thought it was funny to write a song that said today is the greatest day of your life because it can't get any worse." Corgan never thought much of this song. He thought of it as a light pop song, even though many listeners thought it was quite meaningful.
