The Woman customer was one of the people who took advantage of the knock-down prices when Gamma Garments held a sudden summer sale in July 1968. Neither manageress Emily Nugent nor assistant Lucille Hewitt had been given much notice of the sale by head office and Emily especially was feeling bedraggled when the customer and her friend asked about an item. The woman wanted to know if they had the same garment in a cherry plum colour, though she was willing to take it in an ordinary plum colour at a pinch. They examined the garment in the light near the door and then said that as it was for a friend of theirs, they would return with her later. A listening Elsie Tanner, well versed to sales pitch and customer rejoinders at Miami Modes, knew a barefaced lie when she heard one.
