  • Charles Healey was a Lieutenant General in the United States Air and Space Force. He commanded the Lewis and Clark from the 1960s to the 1990s, then went into cold sleep and travelled to the Tau Ceti system aboard the Admiral Peary. Upon arriving in Home orbit, Healey was revived and given command of the starship. When the Commodore Perry joined his command, its crew offered him a retirement package, but he declined it and promised to remain the ship's commander until his death. Healey was a by-the-book general on the order of Curtis LeMay. He deeply distrusted and disliked Glen Johnson, a pilot who joined the crew of the Lewis and Clark in 1963 by more or less stowing away and later served under Healey once again on the Admiral Peary. Healey also despised Sam Yeager, the man who was part of the diplomatic party to the Race's homeworld, viewing him as a traitor for revealing that the American government was responsible for the 1962 nuclear attack on the Race's Colonization Fleet, a revelation which led to the nuclear destruction of Indianapolis in 1965. Healey branded Yeager a "Lizard-lover", believing Yeager cared more about the Race than he did about humanity or his own country. He was not pleased when Yeager was made the leading ambassador to Home after The Doctor, who had actually been appointed to the post, failed to revive from cold sleep. For his part, Yeager believed that Healey had no capacity for happiness.
