The Tyrannosauridae is a family of theropod that includes Deinodon, Aublysodon, and the two subgroups Albertosaurines and tyrannosaurines. They were originally classified as Carnosaurs until recent studies showed that they were related to smaller theropods such as birds and Velociraptor. • Tyrannosaurids seem to be Fire Dinosaurs by default, regardless of size. This might be due to the stereotypical depictions in paleo media of Tyrannosaurus living near or wandering in a volcanic surrounding, or because fire symbolically represents raw power and tyrannosaurs appear as if they would rely on brute strength alone.
  • Tyrannosaurs, tyrant lizards or members of the Tyrannosauridae are a carnivorous dinosaur family whose name is derived from the Greek words tyrannos, meaning 'tyrant' and sauros, meaning 'lizard'. Tyrannosaurids were originally classified as 'carnosaurs', along with most of the rest of the large theropods. Recent phylogenetic studies, however, have determined that tyrannosaurids are coelurosaurs, a group which also includes the ornithomimids and the maniraptorans. Thus, they are more closely related to dromaeosaurids than to other large predatory dinosaur groups such as the allosaurids. Discoveries of basal, coelurid-like tyrannosauroids have helped solidify this link.
  • Tyrannosauridae (or tyrannosaurids, meaning "tyrant lizards") is a family of coelurosaurian theropod dinosaurs which comprises two subfamilies containing up to six genera, including the eponymous Tyrannosaurus. The exact number of genera is controversial, with some experts recognizing as few as three. All of these animals lived near the end of the Cretaceous Period and their fossils have been found only in North America and Asia.

Although descended from smaller ancestors, tyrannosaurids were almost always the largest predators in their respective ecosystems, putting them at the apex of the food chain. The largest species was Tyrannosaurus rex, one of the largest known land predators, which measured up to 13 meters (43 feet) in length and up to 6.8 metric tons (7.5 short tons) in weight. Tyrannosaurids were bipedal carnivores with massive skulls filled with large teeth. Despite their large size, their legs were long and proportioned for fast movement. In contrast, their arms were very small, bearing only two functional digits. Unlike most other groups of dinosaurs, very complete remains have been discovered for most tyrannosaurids. This has allowed a variety of research into their biology. Scientific studies have focused on their ontogeny, biomechanics and ecology, among other subjects. Soft tissue, both fossilized and intact, has been reported from one specimen of Tyrannosaurus rex.

Tyrannosaurs are characterized by broad, massive skulls, short, powerful necks, and reduced 'arms' with only two digits. Notable specimens include "Jane", the world's most complete juvenile T. rex. * Weight: up to 6.4 tonnes (up to 7 US tons) * Length: up to 14 metres (up to 46 ft) * Location: Western Europe, North America, Central Asia, and East Asia (area dependent on species) * Period: Late Cretaceous
