James Spencer Cleverly (born 4 September 1969) is a Conservative Party politician. Born in Lewisham, in 2002 he was a candidate in the elections to Lewisham London Borough Council. He attempted to win a seat in the three member Grove Park Ward. Although two of the seats were won by Conservatives, he was in sixth place behind three Labour Party candidates. In October 2003 he contested a council by-election at Lewisham Central Ward but came third, and at the 2005 general election unsuccessfully contested the Lewisham East constituency. In 2006 he was the Conservative candidate for Directly elected mayor of Lewisham, but finished in third place behind Labour and the Liberal Democrats. On the same day he again failed to be elected to Lewisham council, coming fourth in the Catford South Ward.

In 2008 he achieved electoral success, becoming member of the London Assembly for Bexley and Bromley. He was re-elected in 2012 and stood down at the 2016 assembly election. While an assembly member he was the Chairman of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority. At the 2015 general election he was elected member of parliament for Braintree, Essex.
