The film was written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger from a story conceived by Tibbitt and SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg. Like the first two films, the final act (which was directed by Mike Mitchell) mixes the animated characters in a live action world. However, in this film, the characters are animated and rendered in computer animation. The live action scenes were shot in various locations throughout Sydney, Australia and Maine, Florida; filming began on September 18, 2017, in the downtown area, where various establishments were changed to resemble a pet store. Filming completed in December 2017. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 3 was released in the United States on February 8, 2019. It is the first SpongeBob movie to be rated G by the MPAA. The first movie was originally going to have the same plot as this movie, but the creators thought that it was too similar to the 2003 movie, Finding Nemo. This movie takes place before the events of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, as revealed in a post-credits scene. The creators confirmed that the show will continue.
