Butler started his coaching career with various levels of the Wexford Raiders. In 1994-95 he was named coach of the Oshawa Generals and stayed there for two seasons. In 1996-97 Butler moved (for one season) to the Prince George Cougars. He was named the Battalion's coach in their first season in 1998-99 and has been the coach ever since. As of the end of the 2010-11 season, Butler has a record of 398-434-52 with Brampton and a total record of 468-483-65 in the Ontario Hockey League.
