- Titanite, or sphene (from the Greek sphenos (σφηνώ), meaning wedge), is a calcium titanium nesosilicate mineral, CaTiSiO5. Trace impurities of iron and aluminium are typically present. Also commonly present are rare earth metals including cerium and yttrium; calcium may be partly replaced by thorium.
- Titanite was a rare substance found exclusively on the world of Haariden. It was the source of the civil war that raged for years on the planet, mostly because of the difficulty and costliness of mining it. It had properties that were used in the production of bacta. Granta Omega planned to use this, as well as the alazhi of his property on Thyferra, to dominate the galactic bacta market. He used the fighting on Haariden to prevent Republic scientists from gathering all the data on the titanite deposits, however, his plans were disrupted by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.
- The history of the Titanites can be traced to the 22nd century. It was during this time that a group of human colonists settled the Saturnian moon of Titan. Although it is little understood, either certain properties of the Titan atmosphere or its proximity to the rings of Saturn have endowed the Titanites with a wide variety of unexplainable powers; most of these powers are psychic, and they often follow no traceable sequence of genetic transference.
- When Lieutenant Boma expressed fear that the plates of the shuttlecraft Galileo would be smashed in by a Taurus II anthropoid, Spock stated that the plates were titanite and added they would therefore hold, at least for a while.
