- Gordon Bitner Hinckley was the fifteenth Prophet and President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church, as it is commonly known. He held that position from March 12, 1995 until January 27, 2008 when he died. He had served in a full-time capacity for the Church since 1958. During his tenure as President of the LDS Church, Hinckley traveled the world extensively and met with many journalists, government officials, civic leaders, and heads of state. He had earlier served 14 years as a counselor in the First Presidency, and as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for 20 years prior to that. President Hinckley was named to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on October 5, 1961. On July 23, 1981, he was called into the First Presidency to serve as Counselor and on December 2, 1982, was named Second Counselor to President Spencer W. Kimball. He served as First Counselor to President Ezra Taft Benson from November 1985 to May 30, 1994. On June 5, 1994, he was called as the First Counselor to President Howard W. Hunter. He was also ordained and set apart as the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

W 1928 ukończył szkołę średnią w Salt Lake City, następnie studiował filologię angielską i dziennikarstwo na University of Utah. W latach 1933-1935 pracował jako misjonarz w Londynie. Po powrocie do Salt Lake City pracował w instytucjach kościelnych, m.in. rozgłośni radiowej i szkolnictwie. W 1961 został powołany w skład Rady Dwunastu Apostołów, będąc wówczas najmłodszym jej członkiem. Pełnił także szereg innych funkcji w Kościele Jezusa Chrystusa Świętych w Dniach Ostatnich. W lipcu 1981 został powołany na nadzwyczajnego doradcę w Radzie Prezydenta Kościoła; skład rady uzupełniono ze względu na podeszły wiek i zły stan zdrowia zarówno ówczesnego prezydenta, Spencera Kimballa, jak i dwóch doradców, N. Eldona Tannera i Mariona Romneya. Po śmierci Tannera w 1982 Romney przeszedł na stanowisko pierwszego doradcy, a Hinckley pełnoprawnego drugiego doradcy. Prowadzi również działania edukacyjne. W czerwcu 2004 został odznaczony przez George'a W. Busha Prezydenckim Medalem Wolności. Otrzymał szereg doktoratów honoris causa, m.in. Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Southern Utah University. W czerwcu 2007 ukończył 97 lat; był najstarszym prezydentem w historii Kościoła Jezusa Chrystusa Świętych Dni Ostatnich.
