Andrei Markov, nicknamed "Akula", was a human male ace TIE pilot in the Imperial Navy, holding the rank of colonel. However, he eventually became dissatisfied with the Galactic Empire, deeming it too corrupt due to Palpatine. A lover of his that he met on Berchest, in the Inner Rim Territories, Krista Yoslav, was killed by stormtrooper during a raid. Because of those two problems, Andrei attempted a coup d'état against the Imperial government, with a fleet of naval vessels commanded by captains who felt the same. The coup ultimately failed, and most of the fleet was destroyed. Markov fled from Coruscant and defected to the Alliance to Restore the Republic, though kept his Royal Guard TIE interceptor, the Akula 1. He served in the Rebel Navy as a major, and was invited to join Rogue Squadron. Andrei declined, for personal reasons. During the final year of the war, he fought at the Battle of Endor. During the engagement, Imperials often mistook him for their own due to his red TIE interceptor, which gained him a considerable amount of kills. He was known among the Imperial Armed Forces as a highly skilled pilot, and led the elite Akula Squadron. He was given the Medal of Skill, Victory, and Emperor's Will. The latter was ironic, as Andrei ended up committing a coup against the Emperor later on. He was loyal to the Empire in his own way, thinking that overthrowing the "corrupt" Emperor to save it was his duty. At the same time, though, it was taking revenge on Palpatine, as it was he who ordered the campaign on Berchest that killed his lover. Upon defecting to the Rebel Alliance, Andrei was invited to join the legendary Rogue Squadron by Wedge Antilles, though he declined for personal reasons. Fighting at Endor, he was awarded the Hero of Endor medal. He fought in the Yuuzhan Vong War for the New Republic, and ended up defecting to the Imperial Remnant upon it's reformation into the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances.
