| - Muammar Gaddafi is a Libyan man of revolution and politician, born 1942-2011. Gaddafi is commonly known as Colonel Gaddafi.
- The son of an impoverished Bedouin goatherder, Gaddafi became involved in politics while at school in Sabha, subsequently enrolling in the Royal Military Academy, Benghazi. Founding a revolutionary cell within the military, in 1969 they seized power from King Idris in a bloodless coup. Becoming Chairman of the governing Revolutionary Command Council (RCC), he dissolved the monarchy and proclaimed the Republic. Ruling by decree, he implemented measures to remove what he viewed as foreign imperialist influence from Libya, and strengthened ties to Arab nationalist governments. Intent on pushing Libya toward "Islamic socialism", he introduced sharia as the basis for the legal system and nationalized the oil industry, using the increased revenues to bolster the military, implement social progra
- Colonel Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi, born June 7th 1942, staged a bloodless coup d'état of Libia on September 1st 1969, where he led a small team of junior officers and overthrew then-King Idris, while he was in Turkey for medical treatment. Disposing of Crown Prince Sayyid Hasan ar-Rida al-Mahdi as-Sanussi (Idris' nephew), they abolished the monarchy and proclaimed the new Libyan Arab Republic. This was likely fueled by the frustration and shame felt by Libyan officers, who stood by helplessly at the time of Israel's swift and humiliating defeat of Arab armies on three fronts in 1967. - His long-term political platform had helped to keep Libya in a state of suspended animation, all while acting as the United States' regional marionette. With strong private ties to a wide range of businesspersons and politicians, and with Libya being the 18th largest oil producing country, Gadaffi amassed a fortune (some of it legally) in the tens of billions. Ninety percent of his money was spent on his wardrobe, which was the largest, and therefore gayest, in the world. Unfortunately, all of his Burberry scarves were seized following the 2011 Libyan Civil War.
