He played senior hockey in the Ottawa City Senior League before and after World War I with the Ottawa Munitions and the Ottawa Veterans. In 1922 Helman was signed as a free agent with the Senators and played for three seasons, winning the Stanley Cup in 1923. He retired in 1925 but made a brief comeback with the Saskatoon Sheiks of the Prairie Hockey League in 1926-27. In the NHL Helman played in 44 games and scored 1 goal.
