He was born with his full name, Andronikos Doukas Angelos Komnenos Palaiologos and was the son of Michael IX Palaiologos and Rita of Armenia. During his younger years, he was proclaimed co-emperor before 1313 and in April 1321, he rebelled against his grandfather, Andronikos II Palaiologos. He was crowned co-emperor on February 1325 formally before ousting his grandfather and becoming the sole emperor on 24 May 1328.

Bithynia was used to hold back the Ottoman Turks but his reign failed at all attempts to save it and failed at the defeat at Rusokastro against the Bulgarians, the only successful things were the recovery of Chios, Lesbos, Phocaea, Thessaly and the Despotate of Epirus. His death lead to the Byzantine civil war of 1341-47 between his Empress-dowager, Anna of Savoy, and his close friend and supporter known as John VI Kantakouzenos.
