Bithynia was used to hold back the Ottoman Turks but his reign failed at all attempts to save it and failed at the defeat at Rusokastro against the Bulgarians, the only successful things were the recovery of Chios, Lesbos, Phocaea, Thessaly and the Despotate of Epirus. His death lead to the Byzantine civil war of 1341-47 between his Empress-dowager, Anna of Savoy, and his close friend and supporter known as John VI Kantakouzenos.
