Afterwards the three Marauders were severely punished, but were not expelled like Severus had hoped, and he was sworn to secrecy about the incident. Although Remus was the one who bit him, he harbored no ill feelings towards the former Marauder, and the two actually became friends, bearing the transformations each month together. During school, Severus headed the Fellowship of the Basilisk, a group of Slytherins originally dedicated to combat the influence of the Marauders. Sometime after the werewolf incident, Severus had "declared war" on the Marauders. What followed was a two-month long conflict between the Marauders and the Fellowship; James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew up against Severus Snape, Regulus Black and Narcissa Black respectively. After the serious injury of Narcissa Black during a routine attack by the Marauders, they were pressured to end the conflict, and the Marauders surrendered to the Fellowship in front of everyone in the Great Hall. During the First Wizarding War, Severus elected to remain neutral, however remained in contact with his friends from both sides. Towards the end of the war, the Order of the Phoenix issued an ultimatum to all neutral parties; either join their side or they would be considered an enemy. With no plan to join either side, Severus cooperated with other neutral families such as the Greengrasses and the Selwyns to prepare for full-scale war. Thankfully, the war ended before the ultimatum's deadline was reached. After the war, Severus married newly-widowed Narcissa Black, adopting her infant son, Draco, and having two children of his own; twins Septimus Regulus and Eileen Druella Snape, born in 1984. He accepted the position of Potions Master at Hogwarts after Professor Slughorn's retirement, and became head of Slytherin House as well. Throughout the 1980's, Severus also developed a close bond with Harry Potter, the seemingly neglected Potter twin, after he ran away from home and requested sanctuary with Snape's family. After Quirinus Quirrel's death in 1992, Severus successfully took over the Defence Against the Dark Arts position; Horace Slughorn was convinced to return to his position as Potions Master. When war finally broke out with the return of the Dark Lord, Severus initially wanted to remain neutral, but after a Death Eater attack on the Weasleys, seriously injuring Arthur, Severus decided to cooperate with the Order of the Phoenix against the Dark Lord.
