Having invented it, it became obvious that it had been invented forever. In truth, the first he wrote was "A Treataizzze on the The best Scale For A Mappe OF Ankh Morpork", but since he a) decided that the 'best scale' would be 1:1 2 b) wanted to illustrate his thesis with an example c) somehow thought The Shades would be a good place to start he could not get a publisher to undertake the task. This failure to write a 'serious' work led him to believe that the future lay with 'exposees' of the lives of some of his colleagues.

Terry took Death's arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night. The End.
