The nickname is an homage to the Hamilton Steelhawks Ontario Hockey League team which played in Hamilton from 1984 to 1988 who relocated to Niagara Falls to become the Niagara Falls Thunder and are now known as the Erie Otters. The team is expected to have rivalries with the nearby Brantford Blast, Dundas Real McCoys, and Stoney Creek Generals which are all located with about a 50 km (30 mile) radius.
