The Pillar of Olympus was an enormous column of rock that prevented Mt. Olympus from crashing to Earth. After being freed by his brothers, Oceanus and Helios, Atlas wanted to destroy the Pillar in revenge against the Olympians. Hercules was desperate to prevent this, as Olympus would have hit the Earth with sufficient force to disrupt its orbit, which would have lead to the death of everything on Earth. Although Atlas successful in toppling the Pillar, he was turned into stone by Hera almost immediately after, with Olympus coming safely to rest on his upraised arms.("Full Circle") In taking the place of the Pillar, Atlas entered mythology as the one who held up the heavens.
