He played junior hockey for the Wetaskiwin Canadians in 1948-49 and the Moose Jaw Canucks from 1949 to 1951. Hucul turned pro with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1951-52 and played 118 games for them over three seasons. Hucul played with the Calgary Stampeders from 1954 to 1963, making the Western Hockey League all star team six times over that span. He was also the team's coach at the end of the 1962-63 season. When the Stampeders folded in 1963, Hucul was accquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played with the Denver Invaders and the Victoria Maple Leafs until 1967.

He was chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft and played 43 games for the expansion team in 1967-68. Hucul retired in 1968 to become the coach of the Kansas City Blues for a season. He also coached the Victoria Cougars in 1971-72.
