The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature, and exclusively federal in nature: there are no state courts. The current Austrian government was established by the Habsburgs following the 1972 civil war, in which the Nationalists established themselves as the dominant political party in the nation. The government was reformed to follow a more powerful executive model, more closely resembling a constitutional monarchy. Since then the Habsburgs have ruled over Austria.
