| - There's no direct mentions in the manga, only implied ones. The clear, direct statement on this is in Perfect Guidebook 2, in the page with the Piramid of Hierarchy of Amestrian Military and who's where in that "Piramid". The quote stated there is: "General Grumman: Grandfather of Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye from her mother's side, Grumman is the head of the Eastern Headquarters... etc" So, this clarifies why Riza doesn't bear the last name "Grumman", since the General was the father to her mother.

However, it seems as if Riza is not aware of this connection to the General, since both her parents (as stated by Riza in chapter 63 of the manga) ceased all connections with their respective families by the time they got married, making Riza unaware of any relatives. (It's cogitated, though not confirmed, that may be due to Berthold Hawkeye's uneasiness with military) It is implied Grumman, however, is aware of it, since he mentions "his granddaughter" to Colonel Mustang, trying to persuade the Colonel into marring her. It's not clear if Roy is aware they're actually talking about Riza.
