The 1954 Southern 500 was a Grand National (now Sprint Cup) event held at Darlington Speedway on September 6, 1954. Curtis Turner had the most dominating car of the event, but Herb Thomas took control late and held off Turner by 26 seconds for the victory. Eventual season champ Lee Petty finished 38th after engine woes. Stats
