  • JP Balmet, full name John-Paul Balmet, is an artist who lives in Redwood City, California, United States. He is a concept designer for Lucasfilm Animation. His spouse is a woman named Kristel, whom he was dating in 2008 and was married to by 2010. From a young age, he enjoyed reading the works of Ray Bradbury, who first interested him in science fiction works. He attended Highland High School in Bakersfield, California from 1997 until 2000, when he graduated and moved on to Bakersfield College. He left there in 2003 and studied at San Jose State University, an opportunity he considered life changing. In 2005, he was the layout artist and color designer for a short film, Thunderbean Animation's "Fumi and the Bad Luck Foot," that was showed at the Sundance Film Festival in 2006. He also worked on another Thunderbean production, "Cole Needs Women," in 2006. He graduated from university with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in animation and illustration in 2007. From then until 2008, he worked his first art job out of school: character concept artist for the video game The Godfather II, very grateful for the experience this gave him. While working on Godfather II, he also worked freelance for House of Chai Animation for a few months on a pitch for Nickelodeon, "Aletta out of Water." He had been under contract until the end of February, 2008, but this was extended to the end of April. Balmet worked on the video game Rift, starting within two weeks after his Godfather contract expired, and he was promoted to Senior Concept Artist in April 2010. He was hired as a concept designer for Lucasfilm Animation in November 2010. In 2011, he drew concept art of the Falleen Black Sun Vigos for "Eminence," an episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He worked on Gungi and Katooni of another episode, "The Gathering." Balmet is also a writer. He released a series of illustrations with prose blurbs he called "Static" from the end of 2011 into 2012 that told the story of two men investigating a site on an arctic planet. This was an amalgamation of a number of short stories he had written. He made a New Year's resolution in 2013 to write fifty-two short stories and illustrate each one.
