The airfield was occupied and was repaired by the Japanese occupational forces, and as well stripping anything worth useful from downed American aircraft to be utilized by its technicians. After the islands fell it was handed over to the Imperial Army, who used it for their own planes. When the United States retook Hawaii in 1943, Wheeler Field was again bombed and repaired.
