Form Zero, while not an actual form of lightsaber combat per se but rather an ethical principle, is the idea that Jedi should know when to use their lightsaber and when to find an alternative means of solving a problem. This idea was defined by Jedi Master Yoda to address the need of the Jedi to restrain themselves when tempted to use "aggressive negotiations," and instead use another well-developed Jedi skill, such as the Jedi mind trick.

This idea was defined by Jedi Master Yoda to address the need of the Jedi to restrain themselves when tempted to use "aggressive negotiations," and instead use another well-developed Jedi skill, such as the Jedi mind trick. This is a form used to arrive at a solution without resorting to violence. Often the sight of an unignited lightsaber can be enough to cause individuals that might be potential enemies to become more cooperative. The Darksider, Arien Garix, has a slightly different take on Form Zero, preferring not to draw his lightsaber because he believes using it is a failure on his part to prevent a fight, which he sees as barbaric. He seeks instead to defeat or dominate his enemies through other methods. Few other Darksiders share Arien's point of view as it does technically fall under the auspices of the peaceful ethics of Form Zero.
