The grape is also grown in the state of California in the United States, where it is known as Napa Gamay. Valdeguié in France has a poor reputation as a workhorse variety grown to attract grants from the European Union, who promptly turned it into industrial alcohol. Napa Gamay is not related to the famous Gamay of Beaujolais, and the name is being phased out to avoid confusion. It will not be allowed on U.S. wine labels after 2007.
