The mother, as most mothers would, searched the town frantically. She searched all her neighbors houses, and their barns. When she failed to find her child there she searched the woods. She searched the woods for many hours. until finally the sun set and she became lost herself. She wandered the darkness, tearing her clothes and flesh on thorns. Panic over took her, and she eventually began to run. She collapsed many hours later, at the door of a small cottage. The owner of that cottage offered to rescue her, if she would help him. She agreed to anything, and so the Matron was born. She escaped almost twenty years later. Found a number of children who needed care, and she became the Matron once more. This time, it was on her terms. Description: The matron is an ancient, hunched creature. The curve of her back is a smooth hump. Her skin is a soft green. Her once black hair is mostly gray. It hangs off her head in stringy clumps. Her broad jaw bares a mostly toothless smile, which distracts people from her intelligent and fierce eyes. Orange. Her eyes are the dull orange of Halloween, and they gleam like the edge of a blade. When she speaks, each word sounds like a rasp for breath. The matron inspires her courts emotion in other changelings. They are terrified of her, but not because of some mystical power. They are afraid of disappointing her. Like that grandmother everyone loves, but acts wearily around.

Elsa's preferred curative method ceased to be restorative walks in the garden and quiet reading, and instead became electro-shock treatment, administered for as long as was possible without blowing the fuses. Elsa lost her right hand to gangrene after a vicious bite from a convulsive patient, but even this setback could not derail her psychotic ambitions. With a prosthetic hand, Elsa found she could operate the electro-shock machine all day, whereas before she had to stop when the arthritis in her fingers flared up. Elsa's sadistic torturing was only uncovered when the Swiss electricity board decided to investigate just why a small village in the mountains was consuming more juice than Zurich. Elsa was subsequently captured and placed under house arrest.
