SoW uses the bleeding system, which means you fall unconscious at 0 HP and slowly start bleeding at 1 HP per 3 rounds, with a 15% chance that the bleeding slows down to 1 HP per 6 rounds. Any familiars or animal companions you have are dismissed. When unconscious, there is also a 15% chance your condition improves on its own and you become stable and eventually conscious again. Unless the bleeding is stopped with a heal kit, healing spell or the Heal Ability, you will "die" upon reaching -10 HP. Logging off while bleeding will instantly kill the character.

  • 1 The newly dead character must make a Fortitude save as if resisting a permanent negative level; if the character fails it, becomes an undead. It takes a number of nights equal to the victim's constitution bonus (minimum 1). 2 If the character has levels in Shadowcaster or any shadow-based prestige class, they have dealt with Shadow's power for gain. The same is true for any psionic character who has more stygian powers than Wisdom bonus. Warlocks are born with the taint of shadow on their soul. 4 I.e. who die solely due to negative levels.

Unless the bleeding is stopped with a heal kit, healing spell or the Heal Ability, you will "die" upon reaching -10 HP. Logging off while bleeding will instantly kill the character. When you die you are sent to the Middle Realm, from where you can respawn back to life at the cost of 100 XP per level. You may respawn back to any of the towns in the module, or to the party leader with 50% HP and -2 penalty to a random ability score. You cannot lose a level from this XP loss. When another player uses Raise Dead or Resurrection on your corpse, you come back to life and lose no XP. However, despite the names of the spells, PCs who are reduced to -10 HP in combat against ordinary spawns are typically considered in a coma-like state, so close to death that ordinary means of healing them besides are no longer effective. Actual death outside of a DM run event is optional. The spells Raise Dead and Resurrection mechanically functions as normal. You may also ‘use’ another players corpse on an NPC cleric, and the NPC may raise the corpse if you can pay for the raising. A character will NOT remember anything from being in the Middle Realm when returning to life. The character should also not remember the last five minutes of life (or more, if the character has been dead for a long time). When you die, you will forget what killed you. You may not drop items when dead and leave them in the Middle Realm, other players may loot your corpse if a DM is around.

Warlocks are born with the taint of shadow on their soul. 3 Such characters must make a Fortitude or Will save (whichever is better) with a DC of 10+number of shadow-based class levels, or become a vampire. Even if they successfully make this save, they must still make another save as described above. 4 I.e. who die solely due to negative levels. 5 The victim returns as an undead according to the following chart:
