Both his parents were Roman Catholics, and he had six siblings, of whom five survived. Muskie became vice president (under president Harold Brown) on 20 January 1977, and became president of the United States of America upon president Brown's resignation on 8 May 1980. President Muskie belonged to the Democratic Party. However, he lost the presidential election in November 1980, and succeeded on 20 January 1981 as President of the United States of America by the Conservative Party candidate George Bush.
