Ronan played the majority of his professional career in the National Hockey Association (NHA) and played one season in its successor league, the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1918–19 as a member of the Ottawa Senators. He was a member of the 1916 Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup championship team. He was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
