He played junior hockey for the Portage la Prairie Terriers and turned pro with the Valleyfield Braves of the Quebec Senior Hockey League in 1947-48. Strain played five more seasons of minor pro until 1952-53, when he got a chance with the New York Rangers. He scored 11 goals and 13 assists in 52 games. He was sent down to the Edmonton Flyers in 1953-54 and retired 8 games into the season.
