- Cave Story (洞窟物語 Dōkutsu Monogatari, Translates to Butthole tale) is a ripoff of the marvelous Zork made by the Japanese Basement gamer Pixel in 2004. As Pixel had spent most of his childhood playing old-time basement dweller games such as Castlevania and metroid as well as (seemingly) saw the gameplay of Zork it has became a favorite past time for poor basement dwellers who don't have money to buy call of duty but thought Maple Story and D&D sucked big time. Ah, also there is one thing the article doesen't tell you. It's a really tragic game.
- Cave Story is a WiiWare video game that is based on the freeware game of the same name. It has improved graphics and music, and features other improvements as well. If fans of the original prefer the graphics and music from the freeware game, then they can alternate between the two.
- Cave Story has seen various official and unofficial ports to other video game platforms. With collaboration from Pixel, Nicalis released extended versions of the game to Nintendo's WiiWare and DSiWare services in 2010. A 3DS remake with a new 2.5D aesthetic was released in November 2011 along with Cave Story+, a remake for PC and Mac on Steam. One of the more recent releases was on the Nintendo 3DS eShop; this was, at the time, likely the last, as Pixel had stated that he wishes to avoid working with publishers in the future.. However, the Nintendo Switch port was released on June 20th, 2017. A comparison of all the official ports and remakes can be found at version differences.
