Prionomyrmex, is an extinct genus of ants belonging to the subfamily Myrmeciinae. This genus is known only from fossil specimens in amber dating to the Eocene. I was suggested by Baroni Urbani in 2000 that the living genus Nothomyrmecia belongs in Prionomyrmex while describing the extinct species P. janzeni. This view was rejected by Ward & Brady in a 2003 paper discussing the taxonomy of the subfamily. Baroni Urbani responded to the rejection of the synonymy in a 2005 paper. As of 2009 the synonymization of the two genera has been rejected by most entomologists.
