He played with the senior Hamilton Tigers from 1918 to 1924, winning the Allan Cup in 1919. In 1924 he became the first player to sign a contract with the expansion Boston Bruins. Mitchell played two seasons for the Bruins, playing in 44 games and scoring 6 goals. In 1926-27 he was the player-coach of the New Haven Eagles. Mitchell played in 1927-28 with the Windsor Hornets and then retired.
