Bolt!'s sound was very grungy punk, no bass, basic drum beats, and low distorted vocals .Their live shows often features impulsive drinking, Joel Robinson using anything around as a slid for his guitar, and makeshift costumes (often dresses and Duch clothing). The lyrics (often offensive and vulgar) were often made up on the spot. After "It's Free" was released, the band developed a more Noisy but pretty sound, in comparison to Sonic Youth, and also just plain noisy songs in comparison to Arab on Radar or Lightning Bolt and the Locust.

They plan and still plan to change the face of Punk Rock. Claiming, "It's overdone, not boring, but too many pepole are doing it all the same, it's been that way for years."
