One of two halves of "Beater Services", a mechanic service, Rand Travis is a huge guy in his thirties with a good sense of humor, looking for his missing master and assisted by his master's daughter Mel Beater. He's known as "The Crusher" after his tendency to destroy more things than he fixes, an In-Series Nickname he doesn't take to so well. Being in his thirties, he has a lot of experience in dealing with all sorts of people, which is why he sort of tolerates Asakim Dowen, despite the atrocities he committed against Setsuko Ohara, and offers genuine, heartfelt support to her following those encounters with Asakim. He pilots the Gunleon, a GaoGaiGar-like mecha carrying a huge wrench and an assortment of spanners, nailguns and chainsaws with which he can trash his enemies just as efficien

  • One of two halves of "Beater Services", a mechanic service, Rand Travis is a huge guy in his thirties with a good sense of humor, looking for his missing master and assisted by his master's daughter Mel Beater. He pilots the Gunleon, a GaoGaiGar-like mecha carrying a huge wrench and an assortment of spanners, nailguns and chainsaws with which he can trash his enemies just as efficiently as he can repair damaged allies. He and the Gunleon exemplify these tropes: * Badass Normal: Rand's not a Sphere holder like Setsuko or Mel, but he still kicks mucho ass. It's pretty much required of him, since Mel is too inexperienced to be piloting a mech. * The Berserker: The Gunleon's strongest attack could best be described as the machine ripping the enemy apart in a feral rage. * Big Fragging WRENCH * Boisterous Bruiser * Chainsaw Good * Combat Medic: Gunleon can repair allied units - in this game, it automatically heals units paired up in the same squad with it by a small amount every turn. This marks the first time a protagonist mecha is equipped with a innate-healing ability. Later, it gets the ability to resupply ammo and energy. * Cool Old Guy: Not really old, but mature enough that he hangs out with Gain Bijou, Roger Smith, Holland Novak, and Jamil Neate. * Dirty Old Man: Again, not really old, but he likes to use the UN (Universal Network) like most of us do... * Empathic Weapon: The Gunleon CRIES in its final attack animation (also counts as Berserker Tears). * Expy: Lion-themed mecha? Uses construction tools as weapons and has a really BIG one as its most powerful weapon? Associated with/powered by a green-colored energy source? Check, check, and check. * He's Back: He and Mel return in the Second Super Robot Wars Z: Saisei-hen, alongside Setsuko. * Hot-Blooded * Huge Guy, Tiny Girl * Improbable Weapon User: A giant spanner, mini-spanners, nail guns, chainsaw blades and spanner-nunchucks?? * Leitmotif: "Land Crusher"; following a certain event, it becomes Makenaize! Gunleon ("Don't Lose! Gunleon")) * GUN GUN LEON, GUNLEON! GUN GUN LEON, GUNLEON! * Lion in Sheep's Clothing: Not him, but his machine. The Gunleon's pretty damn powerful for a humble repair mech. Turns out there's a good reason for this: the sphere of the Wounded Lion manifested within it in an attempt to avoid being used as a weapon of war. This is why the Gunleon, and by extension Rand, tend to destroy more than they repair. * Actually, it gets even better : Cielo Beater found an ancient Super Robot and repurposed it to be a repair mech. Man, that sphere is terrible at choosing its target. * Manly Tears: See Empathic Weapon above. * Meaningful Name: His machine likely refers to the constellation Leo. * Mighty Glacier: Gunleon, with the added bonus of being able to repair itself. * Name's the Same: Rand is neither related to nor an Expy of country-music singer Randy Travis. * Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In Saisei-hen, he gets attacked by a berserking Crowe, and counters with his usual methods. Result : a completely trashed Brasta. * Obfuscating Stupidity: Rand seems like the kind of guy to use brute force for everything, but he caught onto Löwen General's true colors pretty early and wasn't surprised at all by his betrayal. * Red Baron: "The Crusher", but Rand doesn't like the nickname. * Running Gag: He prefers "The Heat" monniker, instead. He ends up subverting his usual reaction to "The Crusher", on the basis that that gag had already run its course. There's also his "Heat Smile", which absolutely everyone comments on as being "stuffy". * Swiss Army Weapon: Gunleon's wrench turns into a pincer claw with a piledriving drillbit in the center for it's "The Heat Crusher" attack. * Super Mode: Using the Sphere of the Wounded Lion, the Gunleon transforms into its "Magna Mode" to perform its two strongest attacks.
