Light Cavalry refers to a class of cavalry featured in all games of the Age of Empires series. Light cavalry possess quick speed and decent attack, but lack hit points required for sustained combat with the exception for War Wagons, Howdahs etc. Most light cavalry units are used for exploring, hit and runs, villager disruptions, and scouting. Almost all the ranged cavalry are light cavalry with the exception of the Mameluke.

Light Cavalry's low cost means an large force can be recruited quickly, and their unmatched speed and attack bonuses also makes them excel at devastating enemy Artillery and Supply Wagons, although their low armour and hit points can make such attack be quickly frustrated by well-prepared enemy. For the same reasons as previously stated, Light Cavalry can also make quick work of Foot Archers and even Gunpowder Infantry in a successful ambush, flanking attack or by numerical superiority; otherwise the opposite will be true, as these foot troops are almost guaranteed to be more numerous, and can decimate an entire contingent of Light Cavalry before it has a chance to close in, as the frail Light cavalrymen have no particular resistance to these unit types' attacks, unlike the slower, but far more resilient Heavy Cavalry. They also have little use in siege operations, since they are weak to building projectiles, like Ranged Cavalry, but lacking the damage bonuses against Civilians and ranged attack that unit type possesses. Starting in the File:Industrial age small.jpg Industrial Age, Ranged Cavalry transition into armored vehicles, and Light Cavalry follows suit by merging into that unit type, gaining substantial damage, armour, and hit point upgrades, in addition to a ranged attack and the ability to strike while on the move.

Far worse are other cavalry units and heavy infantry. Any area infested with spear infantry is a no-go area for Light Cavalry. Some factions, however, have different specialisations: the Russians have Vsadniky, a weaker but cheaper version of Light Cavalry that can be spam-built from the Castle Age onward, which with the Russian bonus for added damage against support units can be highly versatile. In contrast, the Mongols and the Scottish tend to breed horses for durability, albeit their units perform differently: Mongol cavalry is better considered as medium cavalry, while the Scots cavalry concentrates solely on raiding and infiltration tactics. Scottish cavalry is better suited for defence and skirmishing as opposed to the Mongol cavalry which with its added stats can be used to harass heavy infantry. Sadly, neither the Japanese nor the Welsh can train Light Cavalry. Although heavy cavalry tactics would well dominate Europe for three hundred years after the First Crusade, light cavalry continued to be important, especially in areas that were impoverished, highly open, or filled with broken terrain, such as the mountainous south of Spain or the open wastes of Central Asia. The Turks and the Mongols often had the best light cavalry, because of their access to horses and the necessity of light cavalry for operations in the open grassy plains of Asia.
  • Light cavalry comprises lightly armed and lightly armored troops mounted on horses, as opposed to heavy cavalry, where the riders (and sometimes the horses) are heavily armored. The missions of the light cavalry were primarily reconnaissance, screening, skirmishing, raiding, and most importantly, communications, and were usually armed with spears, swords, bows and later carbines. Light cavalry was used infrequently by the Greeks and Romans (though Roman auxiliaries were often mounted), but were popular among the armies and hordes of Central Asia and Southwest Asia. The Arabs, Hungarians, Huns, Mongols, Turks, Parthians, and Persians were all adept light cavalrymen and horse archers. With the decline of feudalism and knighthood in Europe, light cavalry became more prominent in the armies of the continent. Many were equipped with firearms, as their predecessors had been with bows. European examples of light cavalry included stradiots, hobelars, hussars, chasseurs à cheval, cossacks, chevau-légers and some dragoons.
