Wilkes agrees to Ben that he'll stop drinking and he will get them to their destination on time. During a night time stop Wilkes squirrels himself away to take a sneaky drink. He is interrupted by a man called Lucas Rockwell. It turns out during a past encounter Wilkes made some money with Rockwell and whilst waiting for him he got bored and spent his share of the money on cards. Desperate to make the money back he agreed to take Ben, West. In a panic Wilkes attempts to shoot Rockwell in the back but is killed by Rockwell.
