Megapis (Ashmead 1904) is one of three extant subgenera of the Apis genus (honey bees). Apis dorsata is the only species recognized in this classification. A. dorsata (the giant honey bee) is native and widespread across most of South and Southeast Asia. It usually builds single or a few exposed combs on high tree limbs, on cliffs, and sometimes on buildings. They can be very aggressive. A single colony is easily capable of stinging a human "honey hunter" to death if provoked.
