abstract
| - Hilaire Blanchard was elected to Parliament in February 3349. While in Parliament, she worked to reform the Civil Service. In 3363, Blanchard contested the Deputy Leadership of the Liberal Party and was defeated by three votes. Undeterred, Blanchard continued her work in Parliament, and was able to take the leadership in 3379. However, just months into her leadership, a snap election was called and Blanchard had little time to organize the party. The Liberals gained seats and won the most votes of a parliamentary party but most consider the election to have been a defeat for the Liberals. Olga de Búrca was defeated in her bid for reelection and Blanchard was unable to capitalize on the weaknesses of the other parties. The election was nasty and resulted in one of the lowest turnouts ever. Only 57% of Rutanians cast ballots in the election.
