The Air Marshal is in command of Queen Azura's fleet of Stratosleds on the planet Mars, and is seen in the 1938 serial Flash Gordon's Trip to Mars. Although rarely seen throughout the story, he comes into prominence in the later stages when Flash Gordon stages a coup to gain control of Mars from Ming the Merciless, who has tried to have himself proclaimed monarch of the planet following the death of Queen Azura. For reasons unknown, the Air Marshal throws in his lot with Ming and betrays Flash and his friends. Prince Barin eventually takes him prisoner and forces him to bomb the Power House and the Nitron beam, which Ming has been using to attack the planet Earth.

Officers in the rank of air marshal typically hold very senior appointments such as commander-in-chief of an air force or a large air force formation. Officers in the ranks of air chief marshal and air vice-marshal are also referred to generically as air marshals. Occasionally, air force officers of marshal rank are considered to be air marshals.
