When trade began with more civilized nations, the indiginous Crimeans were scattered into warring factions. From this fecund stew erupted the Crimean Messiah and One True Boss, Al Capone (or in Crimyllic, Al C'pwn). Capone rose to power by pwning his predecessor, Boss Nass, but after the Crimean dictator's face was scarred in a bar room brawl with international superspy Lord Byron the world would never again be orange.

  • The war was fought between the Russian Empire on one side and an alliance of France, the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of Sardinia, and the Ottoman Empire on the other. Most of the conflict took place on the Crimean Peninsula, with additional military action in western Turkey and the Baltic Sea region.
  • In 2014, Russia under Putin annexed Crimea. In 2015 Russia annexed Donbass and luganisic oblasts. in 2017 Russia now has complete control over Ukraine, but Putin isn't happy - he wants more land. In 2018 Putin's forces overwhelm Belarus. In 2019 he spills across Lithuania. Then Nato and America declares war on Russia. Two million Russian troops vs. four million NATO troops.
  • The historic Crimean War, so named as most of the fighting took place on the Crimean Peninsula, was waged in 1853-1856. It began when Russia's Czar Nicolas I, claiming to be protecting Orthodox Christians, took advantage of a demonstrably weak Ottoman-Turkish empire and invaded the principalities of Moldavia and Walachia in July 1853. In October the Ottoman-Turks retaliated by declaring war on Russia. Austria was concerned over its economic lifeline, the Danube River, which flowed through and terminated in the occupied provinces. Britain was concerned over its trades routes through Turkey into India. France simply wanted revenge for its sound defeat at the hands of the Russians in 1812. It wasn't long before they were drawn into the Russo-Turkish conflict.
  • On 25 October 1854, a commonly known part of the War occurred called the "Charge of the Light Brigade," in which light-calvary were accidentally made to attack artillery and were killed outright. Agonal, disguised as an officer, actually caused this so he could feed on and enjoy the agony and death. (PROSE: Blood Harvest) The Doctor was present at the Charge of the Light Brigade. (TV: The Evil of the Daleks; AUDIO: The Angel of Scutari) Miss Florence Woolley's father was killed in the war. (AUDIO: Murder at Moorsey Manor)

Most of the conflict took place on the Crimean Peninsula, with additional military action in western Turkey and the Baltic Sea region. The Crimean War is the setting for the flashback in the episode "Night in Question". Both Nick Knight and his master, Lucien LaCroix, are in the Crimea. We do not learn what role the former is playing: unlike LaCroix, he is seen in civilian clothes. The older vampire, however, is posing as a British cavalry officer. LaCroix's interest in being on scene during the Crimean war is the same as his reason for being at battles in the American Civil War a decade later: he preys on the wounded still lying in the field. These serve him as a convenient source of blood, since their deaths will be attributed to their battle injuries. After the battle, therefore, LaCroix scours the field for dying soldiers; but, when he finds one still alive, his intentions are recognized. Even as the vampire bites him, the man summons the strength to snatch up a broken piece of wood and stab LaCroix in the heart. The blow is not immediately mortal. Nick brings his master to a ruined house. However, he initially refuses to remove the stake so LaCroix can heal. He does eventually agree to do so, but only in return for the promise that he will be let to go his own way.

Agonal, disguised as an officer, actually caused this so he could feed on and enjoy the agony and death. (PROSE: Blood Harvest) The Doctor was present at the Charge of the Light Brigade. (TV: The Evil of the Daleks; AUDIO: The Angel of Scutari) Circa the 1970s, the Third Doctor claimed to Robbins that he was wounded in the leg in Crimea. He quickly changed his story to say it was Gallipoli, and then El Alamein, before questioning if it mattered. (TV: The Sea Devils) Mollie Dawson's uncle was killed at the Battle of Inkerman on 5 November of that year. (TV: The Evil of the Daleks) Nathaniel Whitlock's father also fought in the battle. (AUDIO: Moonflesh) In 1872, Major Thessinger told the Sixth Doctor and Peri Brown that he had fought in the same battle. However, the Doctor realised that he was lying as his account of the battle was both inaccurate and glamourised. (AUDIO: The First Sontarans) Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, who later became famous as the author of War and Peace, served as an envoy to the Russian Army during the Crimean War. (AUDIO: The Angel of Scutari) Baron De Guerre also fought in the war. (PROSE: The Vampire of Paris) Edward Fulbright and Roger Bridewell's father served in the Crimea. (PROSE: Evolution) Miss Florence Woolley's father was killed in the war. (AUDIO: Murder at Moorsey Manor) In October and November 1854, Hex worked with Florence Nightingale, treating the wounded at the Scutari field hospital. (AUDIO: The Angel of Scutari) The War Lords kidnapped Crimean War soldiers for use in their War Games. The survivors of the Games were returned to Earth after the War Lords were defeated. (TV: The War Games) On 11 November 1913, an elderly veteran of the Crimean War stood outside the entrance to the village hall in Farringham, Herefordshire where Joan Redfern and John Smith were attending a dance. Smith gave a donation to the Veterans of the Crimea, a charity for the by then aged survivors of the war. The veteran was later vapourised by Son of Mine. Once the Tenth Doctor regained his Time Lord personality, he exacted judgement on Son of Mine and the Family of Blood for this and other senseless killings with everlasting punishments. (TV: Human Nature, The Family of Blood) The son of Professor Cedric Scrivener's butler Hill served in the war. (AUDIO: The Ghosts of Gralstead)

Britain was concerned over its trades routes through Turkey into India. France simply wanted revenge for its sound defeat at the hands of the Russians in 1812. It wasn't long before they were drawn into the Russo-Turkish conflict. The war fighting raged for several years, and contained the famous "Charge of the Light Brigade" which ended the Battle of Balaclava on October 24,1854. Over the winter of 1854-55 the allied French, British and Turkish forces were joined by the Italian kingdom of Sardinia, who wanted British and French support in expelling Austria from Italy. The Treaty of Paris, signed March 30, 1856, ended the war. Among other terms of the treaty, Russia was forbidden to sail a fleet on the Black Sea, the Turks had to promise better treatment for their Christian subjects, and the territory at the mouth of the Danube was returned to Turkey. The war was the first to employ armored warships, submarine mines, intercontinental telegraph and war photography. It also gave rise to the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest award for military valor. An overwhelming majority of casualties in the war died from disease and poor medical care. Florence Nightingale rose to prominence when her efforts to treat the sick and wounded resulted in a scientific approach to nursing, later encompassed in the nursing school she founded a few years after the war. In the Nextian Universe, the Crimean War never ended. Though active fighting has only occurred during 7 of the 131 years of the war, those 7 years were incredibly bloody, costing untold lives. Both Thursday and Landen are veterans of the war, and Thursday's brother, Anton, was one of those lost on the battlefields during the Charge of the Light Armored Brigade.
