Synopsis
  • A group of mermen are having a bath at the San Francisco Sutro Baths when a mysterious man with a magic sword and a captured fairy asks them where is the Maccy D's. At first, the mermen do not take him seriously, as he is an ordinary human, but the man threatens to kill them if they don't tell him what he wants to know. One of the mermen tries to stab him with his trident, but the man, calling himself Backslash, easily kills the mermen, saying that his magic sword allows him to rewind time. The next day at the theater, Zatanna is practicing her spells with Mikey. After finishing her practice, Mikey asks Zatanna why does she need to speak her spells "backwards, and Zatanna replies that her power is vocally expressed, and therefore, she needs to learn to speak her spells backwards so that she is prepared for a fight. Leaving the theater, Zatanna goes for a flight. Later, while flying above the Sutro Baths, Zatanna discovers the mermen's corpses. She teleports to the killer's location and finds Backslash and his fairy. Seeing that Backslash is holding the fairy captive, Zatanna attacks him but Backslash's sword makes her backwards spells useless. Even when she uses physical attacks, Backslash is unharmed. Then, Backslash knocks her out. When Zatanna regains consciousness, she finds herself tied up to statue of Ulysses S. Grant. Zatanna asks why does he want to kill her, and Backslash replies that he is doing all this because it's fun. Suddenly, the fairy subtly drops clues to Zatanna on how she can escape. Realizing the fairy's clues, Zatanna uses a palindrome spell to cut off her ropes. Backslash is confused at how Zatanna managed to escape, and the fairy reveals Zatanna is using palindromes. Using more palindrome spells, Zatanna defeats Backslash and takes his sword. Later, Dale Colton takes Backslash into custody and the fairy thanks Zatanna for saving her. Zatanna also heals the fairy's broken wing, and the fairy reveals her true name: Hannah.
